Driving to Alaska {Side trip to Stewart, BC and Hyder, Alaska}

We left the RV at Meziadin Provincial Park for the day so we could take a side trip into Stewart, British Columbia and Hyder, Alaska.

We saw Bear Glacier. It's unusual to be able to drive this close to a glacier, so this was a fun experience.

A little farther down the road we witnessed our first avalanche!

We crossed into Hyder, Alaska, population 100. We didn't have to stop at immigration until we turned around and came back into Canada.

This is Fish Creek Wildlife Observation Area. When the salmon are running (mid-July thru early September), both black and brown bears hang out just below this walkway to catch them. No bears here today.

We were on a quest to find Salmon Glacier, but after driving the windy, dirt, mountain roads, we were stopped just a mile from our destination. The road was closed for blasting. Argh!

And right about here is where our GPS just gave up.

We turned around and headed back to Stewart.

The view into the Portland Canal from Stewart. This water forms the boundary between the US and Canada and is Canada's northernmost ice-free port.

I was excited to bird this marshy area, but man was it cold and windy! I still did it anyway.

This was a worthwhile side trip. I'm glad we drove a couple extra hours for this.
