Driving to Alaska {Happy Pig Organic Farm}

(still) DAY 3

As we're driving I was use Google Maps to look at what's ahead. I noticed a farm called, Happy Pig Organic Farm, coming up in Telkwa. I called the owners, Paul and Marlene, and asked if they would be interested in some help with morning chores in exchange for letting us park on their property for the night. They welcomed us and Paul even brought over a dozen fresh eggs as a gift. We went for a short walk before going to sleep.

We saw what we believe are elk in this field. Such a nice view.

Our site for the night.

Day 4

Early in the morning we walked the trail thru the forest and over a river to the farm.
This was by far the best work commute ever!

As soon as we arrived, the kids took turns feeding the baby lamb. Her mama has triplets and has decided that two is all she can handle, so they bottle feed this lamb everyday.

Three alpacas stand guard over the farm. We were shocked to learn that they will scare off a bear if it comes on the property. They are very curious creatures and will run right at anything, which scares away other animals.

Next was time to feed the pigs.

Asher filled their water bowls.

We all tossed organic fruits and veggies to them in addition to their regular feed.

"Big Mama" rules the pen, but showed her softer side by rolling over for a belly rub.

This family farm on 320 acres is the only organic farm in the area. They make weekly deliveries over much of British Columbia, between Prince Rupert and Prince George.

We collected eggs four times. The kids did well, even learning to reach right under the hens to collect.

We were shocked to learn that they collect about 125 eggs per day.

Look at that amazing view of the snow-capped mountains! Ahhhh!

I was impressed that they don't use permanent structures here. They use movable enclosures for the animals so they can rotate the animals to different sections of the farm as needed.

The following week they were due to receive 100 day-old chicks and 125 day-old turkeys. They actually come in the mail! I wish we were there to help her open those boxes. I think that would be so much fun.

We had an absolutely fantastic experience here at Happy Pig Organic Farm with Paul and Marlene. They taught us so much and we will always treasure the day that we spent with them. Next stop, Meziadin Provincial Park.
