Exploring Box Canyon {California}

Leaving Phoenix behind, we decided to check out Box Canyon in California's Mecca Hills Wilderness. By the way, fuel is at least a dollar more per gallon in California, and currently over $6, so filling up before hitting the state line is always a good idea. Nicole is working nearby, so she met us at our campsite at Chiriaco Summit Campground, a free place to camp behind the General Patton Memorial Museum. We all piled into the truck and headed for the canyon. It is actually the same road that runs thru Joshua Tree, just south of 10.

Since there were no other cars, I let Asher ride up front with Daddy. A big deal for him!

Only the first few miles are paved, after that it's hard-packed dirt. In this current condition, it would be fine for cars, however flash floods tear up the road every few years, so you definitely need to check conditions and ALWAYS check for rain in the immediate and surrounding area before entering a canyon. Even distant rain can send a flash flood thru the canyon and be extremely dangerous.

We climbed the canyon wall to check out the view from above.

Nicole and I found hummingbirds and a lifer for me at the end of the canyon, a Pacific-slope Flycatcher.

We found a really cool slot canyon and hiked it for awhile, never finding the end.

We picked a spot to soak in the rugged views while enjoying dinners pre-prepared by Alt Route Meals. These plant-based meals are fully cooked then dehydrated. So your healthy meal is ready just 10 minutes after adding boiling water. Quick and tasty!

Up next... Joshua Tree National Park!
