Cape Breton Highlands National Park {Nova Scotia}

Three days were spent enjoying Cape Breton Highlands National Park. First we hiked up the many steps to the Freshwater Lake Look-out to get a great introduction to the park's landscape.

Next we hiked along Freshwater Lake to Ingonish Beach. This is pretty much the kids' dream come true- a freshwater beach and an ocean beach only 100meters apart with a playground between them!
Clear waves sweeping over our feet, soft sand beneath our toes.

Ocean on the left, lake on the right. Choose your adventure.

Green Cove was one of my favorite stops. First of all it's an ideal place to view the gorgeous cliffs, rocks, crashing waves and signature beauty of the area, but also, here is where I fell in love with a bird called the Northern Gannet. While sitting in this location I watched as more than 50 of them flew past often alone or in groups of 3, though I once saw 12 flying together. All were flying south, maybe migrating? Some even flew right over my head! I managed to get a few photos.

I love this photo Journey took of us with her hair blowing into the frame.

They have such an interesting look to them. I love the sharp black and white colors, their face and eyes. They fly over the ocean and dive like a torpedo into the water to grab a fish. They pop back up out of the water a mere couple seconds later. They're amazing and so interesting to watch.

Our second visit was a lazy beach day at Black Brook Beach. Here a tannin-stained river meets the Atlantic Ocean. The kids enjoyed playing in both. We saw gulls eating small lobsters and found some remnants on the beach.

Our last day we stopped for a couple hikes on our way south to catch the ferry to Prince Edward Island. We really enjoyed our walk thru the bog.

This is a great place to inspect the plant life, particularly interesting
were the peat layer (below) and pitcher plants that eat insects.

Nova Scotia is a wild and beautiful place that will forever be etched in our hearts.
