Blooming trees and learning finance in Eugene, Oregon

The Science Factory in Eugene, Oregon takes the prize for most beautiful museum entry. These flowering trees were just amazing.

Asher was showering Journey with fallen petals.

We lucked out to find a traveling money exhibit at the Science Factory. As a finance major, I was super impressed to see such valuable lessons being taught to children of all ages. They learned about currency by looking at US dollars under a microscope for all of the anti-counterfeiting qualities. They even designed their own currency with their face on it.

Journey learned about running a business, the relationship between supply and demand, effects of uncontrollable factors (weather) and cost of doing business. I had a project in college doing something similar. It was exciting to assist my daughter in learning these valuable relationships and, to be honest, I just had fun playing with the program myself.

She's deciding how much lemonade to make and what price to charge based on the weather forecast and prior sales and prices.

This "game" teaches budgeting and saving for long-term goals. The program tells you how much you made at work this week, how much your rent, car and other expenses are, what your long-term savings goals are, and then allows you to spend as you wish. You can move into a less expensive house or car and decide whether to buy something now or save for future goals. Sometimes you get a raise at work and other times, something breaks and you must pay the unexpected cost to repair it. Real life situations. LOVE THIS!

Both kids participated in a research study by students from the University of Oregon. They were studying how children learn, showing vs doing.

Afterwards we walked from the Science Factory thru Alton Baker park and it was absolutely delightful. Trees of many different colors were blooming all over the park. Multiple lakes made it a nice birding area also. The Pre-trail takes

The next day the kids and I went for a wonderful hike thru Hendricks Park. We chose the Ridgeline trail starting at the playground and had Daddy pick us up at the end.

They created a game of "kick the stick" that entertained them during the hike.

We found some beautiful wild irises growing here.
