A visit with the Royal White Stallions

Royal Lipizzans, the rarest breed of horse, were first bred in the 16th century. They were trained in  dressage, highly controlled movements and jumps that were once used to intimidate enemies in battle. During World War II, the breed was rescued by the US Army which was later portrayed in the Disney movie, Miracle of the White Stallions.

Look closely- all four feet are off the ground and THEN he kicks with his back legs!

We were fortunate enough to be staying just down the road from Herrmann's Royal Lipizann Stallions and were
able to watch a training sessions for their "Airs Above the Ground" performance! The stands were packed!

We learned that Lipizann Stallions are born brown and change to white between 7-10 years old. They live longer than other breeds of horses, up to around 40 years. There are actually two 40 year old stallions living out their golden years here at this location. After the show we met the horses!

While waiting for Daddy to pick us up, they entertained themselves by attempting to sneak up on a hawk, then racing each other thru the fields.
