Turns out Uruguay is just a one hour ferry ride away! So on Thursday, we took the ferry from Buenos Aires across the Rio de la Plata to Colonia del Sacramento, Uruguay. The boat was large and comfortable. We found seats around a table on the second floor, instead of the rows of seats below.
The water is brown, and not just at the coastline, but the entire way to Uruguay. I kept spotting what looked like fishing line just outside the window running vertical, but nothing seemed to be tied to it above. I counted passing at least 20 of them, just on our return sail. Maybe it's some sort of guidance for the captains? But how is it suspended above the water??? If anyone knows, please leave a comment.
We decided to explore by foot, starting with the shoreline park just down the road from the port.
Here I found my first Chimango Caracara and this Chalk-browed Mockingbird feeding a fledgling!
Colonia del Sacramento is a World UNESCO site with a population of just 30,000 but it receives hundreds of thousands of visitors each year. This military fort was built across from Buenos Aires in 1680 by the Portuguese.

I ended up with 28 species of birds in Uruguay, before it was time to head back to the ship.
