Dinos and Dams

When temps were expected to reach 104, we knew we needed to find a campground with electricity for air conditioning. I found a COE, Downstream Campground, at Fort Peck right on the Missouri River so Asher could fish and we could do some sight seeing.

There are some beautiful views of Fort Peck Lake along the way to the dam.

Looking down the spillway.

At the Fort Peck Interpretive Center we watched a documentary on the creation of the dam before checking out the rest of the exhibits. This is the largest hydrolicly filled dam in the US, at 1 mile wide by 4 miles long! Peck's Rex is the main attraction. Found in 1997, it's one of the most complete Tyrannosaurus Rex skeletons ever found.

I found a designated wildlife pasture and did some birding along the drive.

I was surprised to see bison in the pasture.

Back at the campground we found this really cool Ten-lined June Beetle.

A swim beach down the road from the campground.

We stopped at the Fort Peck Hatchery, but it wasn't open to tours. They are capable of producing millions of fish of various species including walleye, northern pike, chinook, salmon and rainbow trout.
