We couldn't leave Alaska without visiting it's most popular national park. When our ranger heard our plans, he let us leave early and cash in our banked day off so we'd have extra time to explore. As we drove north on the Parks highway, we stopped briefly to check out Byers Lake. The lake is nice but the campground loop road was filled with holes, so beware if taking an RV.
We camped for the night at Denali State Park's North Denali Overlook.
We setup the tent just in time as it began to rain shortly afterwards. We met two other families camped there and ended up standing in the rain to chat. One of the families was headed to the national park as well.
Once we arrived and found out there were no sites left, we managed to find our friends from the previous night and asked if we could camp with them. They were happy to help and it turned out to be such a blessing to spend a few days with them. My kids both adored 10 year old Leeora and she was so good with them! Journey held her hand thru all of our hikes and she even gave them both piggy back rides!
The first day we all piled into our truck and drove to Savage River to hike the loop trail.
We all went to bed early-ish because we had a very early morning shuttle to catch.
(More on that in the next post.)
