While looking out at Alcatraz we explained prison, laws and the legal system to the kids at a level they could understand. They also learned about homelessness. ("No, they don't have an RV either.") It was a very educational trip!
Coit Tower closed just as we arrived, but we had time to admire the 360 degree views. We drove down Lombard Street (the famous switchback, one-way road) before the kids and I walked back to it for a better look.
The view in the other direction. You can see the tower we were at on the right.
We parked one street down. This is how steep it was to walk to Lombard!
On our way out of town we stopped to take photos at the Golden Gate bridge.
The Jelly Belly factory offers tours of the actual production line at their near-Sacramento location. Make sure to come during the week to see them working. They walk you thru hallways that wrap around the factory and look down on the action. (Factory photos by Heather G.)
TV monitors play video clips to explain the process that you see before you which is helpful because the group size is pretty large. At the end is a jelly belly tasting bar where you can ask for samples of just about any flavor. The kids decided to try some gross flavors- dog food, grass and stinky socks. They thought it was pretty funny. There was a sale on "belly flops" the beans that aren't quite perfect, so we brought lots home with us.
They have portraits of many famous people, lining the walls. All made with actual jelly beans!
On our way home, Asher wrote out his first words!
